POV
By: Lavana Pauk
Every year around this time, something shifts. The weather gets better. School wraps up. People start talking about summer like it’s going to be different. Lighter. A little more freedom. A little less urgency.
And with that comes a quiet list. Things you’ve been meaning to get to. Conversations you’ve been putting off. Projects that need more than a spare hour between meetings. You tell yourself: summer. I’ll get to it in summer.
It’s one of the most persistent beliefs in both work and life. And it almost never comes true.
It’s not just summer
We do this year-round. After the campaign launches. Once Q2 closes. When the kids are back in school. When things settle down in January. There’s always a condition that has to be met first before the real focused thinking can happen.
The problem is that once that condition gets met, something else takes its place. The campaign launches and the next one is already in motion. Q2 closes and Q3 is already behind. The moment you were counting on quietly disappears, and the next one gets pushed a little further out.
What actually keeps getting bumped
It’s not the urgent work. That gets done regardless. What gets deferred is the strategic stuff. The thinking that requires space. The decisions that matter more than they’re demanding.
There’s a few questions that tend to sit on that quiet, yet important list:
Most people know their version of these questions. They’re not waiting for the answer. They’re waiting for the moment.
Give it a deadline
Here’s the thing about strategic work — it doesn’t arrive with a deadline. That’s why it keeps losing. So give it one. Not a calendar block that gets bumped. An actual deadline. A person to share it with. A date by which something gets decided. Treat it like a deliverable because it is one.
Don’t plan for the breathing room. Plan for the work you keep waiting to get to.
