Hewitt’s Organic Milk – Packaging Design System

The Challenge

Hewitt’s Dairy has been part of Ontario life since 1887, when founder James Hewitt began delivering milk to the people of Hagersville by horse-drawn wagon. When the brand was relaunched as a certified organic line, the challenge was clear: bring Hewitt’s into the organic segment without losing the warmth and accessibility that have always defined it.

Organic dairy has a reputation for feeling aspirational, a little removed from everyday life. Hewitt’s arrived with a different point of view: rigorous certification and genuine farm quality, wrapped in a design that feels welcoming rather than distant. Warm, honest, and rooted in 138 years of Ontario dairy farming, the brief was to make organic feel like it belonged to everyone.

At Junction59, we start every project with the same question: where does this lead? Not only what does this need to do right now, but what comes next. For a brand like Hewitt’s, the packaging is the first chapter. It has to earn attention on shelf, convert a shopper at the moment of decision, and feel worth coming back to every time it comes out of the fridge. But it also has to set the stage for everything that follows.

Our Approach

Junction59 led the project through four phases: discovery and creative direction, overall line concept development, format group adaptation, and final production artwork across 20 SKUs.

Three distinct concepts were developed. The selected direction roots the brand in its agricultural heritage through a warm, earthy background and an illustrated Holstein cow, approachable and honest rather than cold or aspirational. SKU colour-coding across the milk family (blue for 2%, orange for cream variants, brown for chocolate milk) gives the line clear shelf navigation and visual energy as a set. Every decision was tested against the same standard: does this get the product into the cart, and does it make the shopper glad it’s in their fridge?

The zig-zag border motif was retained and refined as a connecting element across formats. PRO-CERT organic certification marks and the “Since 1887” anchor were integrated into the label architecture from the outset, not added as afterthoughts, but built into the visual hierarchy as genuine trust signals that do real work at the moment of decision.

Format & Production

The final design system was applied across three format groups: PET bottles (500 mL and 1 L), HDPE bottles (4 L and 1 L white), and containers (750 g and 250 g). Each group required adapted layout approaches to address proportion, material differences, and labelling requirements, while maintaining the consistency that makes the line read as a family at retail, and translate cleanly when the same products appear in campaign creative or digital content.

The Result

A packaging system that earns its place in the organic dairy aisle on quality and credibility, while staying true to what Hewitt’s has always been: real dairy, from real farms, for real people. The warmth in the design is intentional. Organic shouldn’t feel out of reach.

What Comes Next

Good ideas should lead somewhere. Packaging is the first impression, but it’s rarely the last touchpoint. As Hewitt’s Organic grows its presence on shelf and beyond, Junction59 is thinking about what comes next: how the visual system translates across digital, social, and campaign work, and how the brand story continues to earn trust with every interaction.
