The Thread Between Cause and Donor

One red thread connected every channel, filling a webinar past target and opening new conversations with sales reps.

Not-for-profits have long relied on direct mail to find and keep donors, but many had shifted fundraising budgets toward digital channels. Canada Post Smartmail Marketing wanted to connect with its not-for-profit customers, remind them of the value of direct mail, and open new conversations with its sales team.

Our point of view was that fundraisers respond to the same things their donors do: a clear story, proof that it works, and a reason to act. Rather than lead with any one channel, we built an integrated journey that earned attention at every step and linked each touch to the next.

The idea that tied it together was a thread. A single red thread ran through every email, article, social post, mail piece and webinar screen. It was a simple reminder that strong fundraising comes from connection: between a cause and the right donors, and between every channel in a campaign.

The journey opened with thought leadership. Rep-signed emails shared a Canadian Red Cross case study, showing an 830% return from targeted direct mail, and an article on pairing direct mail with social. Invitations, reminders, organic LinkedIn and Instagram posts and web placements then built momentum toward an IGNITE webinar in English and French, From Outreach to Connection: Rethinking Donor Engagement.

A direct mail package put the thread in their hands. A kraft envelope closed with string and button opened to an interactive two-card mailer that joined on a single strand to complete the line “The thread between your cause and the right donors,” with the webinar invitation on the reverse. A brochure and personalized letter carried the case studies and a postal discount offer. For customers who had opted out of email, the package was their first touch. After the event, a postcard thanked attendees and linked to the recording.

Every touch, in every channel, pointed to one next step: talk to your Canada Post representative.
